With rates of dog obesity on the rise, researchers recommend these 8 tips to help your pet maintain a lean and healthy weight:

1) Visit your vet. Have your veterinarian weigh your dog to check their body condition and recommend specific exercise routines that your specific breed can perform.

2) Feed less amounts. To establish weight loss, begin by reducing your dog’s daily food amount by 20%. After a month, if there’s still no difference, cut it down by another 10%. A new study sponsored by Purina food found that reducing food amounts by a mere 15% could extend a dog’s lifespan by a whopping 1.8 years.

3) Feed less often. Instead of just once a day, break up your dog’s portion into two or three smaller portions. You will increase the calories they burn every day, plus they’ll be less likely to beg for scraps & treats.

4) Add fiber. For dogs that seem to be hungry all the time, you can cut back on their hunger by adding some low calorie fiber to their food, such as green beans or canned pumpkin (not pie filling!). Only a little bit is needed, since the dog’s digestive tract will not absorb very much of the fiber anyway. But it’s just enough to help keep them satisfied.

5) Exercise and play more. Start out slowly by adding a few more walks each week and then work in some more off-leash running and playing. Use a ball or take up a dog sport like tracking. Swim with your dog or take them to the beach for Frisbee. Make sure not to overdo it with young dogs, however, because you need to make sure that their bones and joints are fully formed before building up to full blown running exercises.
